Description
The Colt MK IV refers to a series within Colt’s 1911 lineup, most commonly associated with the Series 70 and later Series 80 Government Models introduced beginning in 1970. Built on the classic 1911 platform, the MK IV models retained the traditional single-action, recoil-operated design while incorporating manufacturing and internal updates over earlier versions.
The Series 70 MK IV became especially well known for its collet-style barrel bushing system intended to enhance accuracy, while maintaining the clean trigger pull characteristic of pre-Series 80 pistols. In the early 1980s, the Series 80 MK IV introduced an internal firing pin safety system for additional drop safety.
Typically chambered in .45 ACP, though also produced in other calibers, the Colt MK IV models feature the iconic 1911 controls—thumb safety, grip safety, single-stack magazine design, and a crisp single-action trigger. The MK IV designation represents a significant era in the evolution of Colt’s classic 1911 pistols and remains popular among collectors and enthusiasts of traditional American handgun design.
