Field Cleaning your Glock Pistol
1. Safety Check (DO NOT SKIP)
- Point the Glock in a safe direction at all times.
- Remove the magazine.
- Pull the slide back and lock it open.
- Visually and physically check the chamber — no ammunition.
- Release the slide.
- Pull the trigger ONLY after confirming the pistol is unloaded
(This is required for Glock disassembly.) - Move all ammunition to a different room.
2. Field Strip the Glock
- Hold the pistol normally.
- Pull the slide back about 1/8 inch (very slightly).
- Pull down both sides of the slide lock simultaneously.
- Push the slide forward and off the frame.
- Remove:
- Recoil spring assembly
- Barrel
You should now have 4 main parts:
- Frame
- Slide
- Barrel
- Recoil spring assembly
3. Clean the Barrel
- Apply gun solvent to a caliber-correct bore brush.
- Run the brush from chamber to muzzle several times.
- Let solvent sit for 1–2 minutes if fouling is heavy.
- Run solvent-soaked patches through the barrel.
- Follow with dry patches until clean.
- Lightly oil a patch and run it through once.
- Wipe the barrel exterior clean.
⚠️ Do not over-oil the barrel.
4. Clean the Slide
Focus on:
- Slide rails
- Breech face
- Extractor area
- Firing pin channel opening (external only)
Steps:
- Apply solvent to a nylon brush or toothbrush.
- Scrub carbon buildup from metal surfaces.
- Use cotton swabs for tight areas.
- Wipe everything dry.
⚠️ Do NOT spray solvent or oil into the firing pin channel.
This can cause malfunctions.
5. Clean the Frame
- Use a dry or lightly solvent-dampened brush.
- Clean:
- Frame rails
- Trigger bar area
- Feed ramp area
- Wipe dry with a lint-free cloth.
⚠️ Do not soak the polymer frame in solvent.
6. Clean the Recoil Spring Assembly
- Wipe with a dry cloth.
- If very dirty, lightly wipe with solvent.
- Do NOT oil the recoil spring.
7. Lubrication (Very Important — Glock Uses Minimal Oil)
Glock recommends only 4 small lubrication points:
Apply ONE drop of oil to each area:
- Barrel exterior
- Lightly coat the barrel where it contacts the slide
- Slide rails
- One small drop spread across all rails
- Connector
- A drop where the trigger bar meets the connector
- Barrel hood
- Where the barrel locks into the slide
❌ Do NOT oil:
- Firing pin channel
- Magazine
- Recoil spring
- Excessively anywhere else
8. Reassemble the Glock
- Insert the barrel into the slide.
- Install the recoil spring assembly.
- Align the slide with the frame rails.
- Pull the slide fully rearward and release.
9. Function Check (Unloaded)
- Rack the slide several times.
- Pull the trigger (you should hear a click).
- Hold trigger to the rear, rack the slide.
- Slowly release the trigger — you should feel and hear the reset click.
- Rack slide again to ensure smooth operation.
10. Final Wipe & Storage
- Wipe exterior with a lightly oiled cloth.
- Store unloaded in a locked container.
- Use a desiccant if storing long-term.
Cleaning Frequency
- After every range session
- Every few months if stored
- Immediately after exposure to rain, dirt, or sweat
