The Colt .45 1911 Pistol Cleaning Guide
1. Safety Check (Absolutely Critical)
- Point the pistol in a safe direction.
- Remove the magazine.
- Pull the slide fully to the rear and lock it open.
- Visually and physically check the chamber — ensure it is empty.
- Move all ammunition to another room.
- Lower the slide carefully.
2. Field Strip the 1911
There are two common setups (GI guide rod or full-length guide rod).
A. Standard GI Guide Rod (Most Colts)
- Press the recoil spring plug inward.
- Rotate the barrel bushing clockwise (toward the ejection port).
- Carefully release the recoil spring plug (it’s under tension).
- Align the slide stop notch with the slide stop.
- Push the slide stop out from the right side.
- Slide the entire slide assembly forward off the frame.
- Remove:
- Recoil spring
- Guide rod
- Barrel bushing
- Barrel
B. Full-Length Guide Rod
- May require an Allen key or paper clip.
- Follow the manufacturer’s manual if present.
3. Clean the Barrel
- Apply solvent to a .45-caliber bore brush.
- Run the brush from chamber to muzzle several times.
- Let solvent sit 1–2 minutes for heavy fouling.
- Run solvent-soaked patches through the barrel.
- Follow with dry patches until clean.
- Lightly oil a patch and run it through once.
- Wipe down the barrel exterior, especially:
- Barrel hood
- Locking lugs
4. Clean the Slide
Focus on:
- Breech face
- Slide rails
- Extractor claw area
- Locking lug recesses
Steps:
- Apply solvent to a nylon brush or toothbrush.
- Scrub carbon buildup.
- Use cotton swabs for tight areas.
- Wipe completely dry.
⚠️ Do NOT flood the firing pin channel with oil or solvent.
5. Clean the Frame
- Use a dry or lightly solvent-dampened brush.
- Clean:
- Frame rails
- Feed ramp
- Disconnector and trigger track area
- Wipe dry with a lint-free cloth.
⚠️ Avoid soaking the frame.
6. Clean the Recoil Spring & Guide Rod
- Wipe with a dry cloth.
- If dirty, lightly wipe with solvent.
- Dry thoroughly.
7. Lubrication (1911s Like More Oil Than Glocks)
Apply light but visible lubrication — not dripping.
Key Lubrication Points:
- Slide rails (frame & slide)
- Barrel exterior
- Barrel locking lugs
- Barrel bushing
- Link and link pin
- Slide stop pin
- Disconnector contact area
👉 A thin line or drop spread evenly is sufficient.
8. Reassemble the Pistol
- Insert barrel into slide.
- Install barrel bushing.
- Insert guide rod and recoil spring.
- Slide assembly back onto frame.
- Align slide stop notch and reinstall slide stop.
- Compress recoil spring plug and rotate barrel bushing back into place.
9. Function Check (Unloaded)
- Rack the slide several times — should move smoothly.
- Engage the thumb safety — trigger should not move.
- Disengage safety — trigger should release hammer.
- Hold trigger to rear, rack slide, release trigger — listen for reset click.
- Engage grip safety test (trigger should not work without grip safety depressed).
10. Final Wipe & Storage
- Wipe exterior metal with lightly oiled cloth.
- Store unloaded in a secure location.
- Use a desiccant for long-term storage.
Cleaning Frequency
- After every range session
- After exposure to moisture or dirt
- Every 3–6 months if stored
